Multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, and composer Harald Lassen is a central figure in the restless wave of Norwegian jazz related music. Across seven solo albums—including the Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy)-winning Balans—Lassen has developed a musical language where epic melodies, fearless improvisation, and strong characters meet in a deeply personal expression.
“Harald’s music is jazz, but jazz with a different shape and colour. Music from a free and open mind,” wrote international music press following the release of Human Samling.
As a saxophonist, pianist, songwriter, and collaborator, Lassen moves freely between genres and artistic scenes. Alongside his own projects, he has worked with poets and fashion designer. Composed music for theatre productions at Det Norske Teatret and collaborated with a wide range of other artists from the worlds of jazz, pop, folk, experimental music, and beyond.
As a socially engaged artist and citizen, Lassen’s work is shaped by themes of eco philosophy, nature, and how to live a meaningful and resonant life through simple means —ideas that form the emotional core of his latest album, RIK (Rich). Raised by classically trained parents and rooted in church music traditions along the southern coast of Norway, Lassen later found his way into Oslo’s underground music scene—contrasting worlds that continue to shape his musical language.
